AL QURAN INSTITUTE

Fostering Mastery of the Holy Quran

This department provides comprehensive training and guidance to students from the elementary level through the successful memorization of the entire Qur’an. Upon completing the full memorization, An-Nour Institute awards an Ijazah and an unbroken chain of transmission (sanad) tracing back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the narration of Hafs (and Shu’bah) from ‘Asim, according to the Munfasil Tariq of Ash-Shatibiyyah and Tayyibat an-Nashr.

The Tahfizul Qur’an Department is divided into three levels:

1. Preparatory Level: Introduction to the Arabic Alphabet, Basic Tajwid, Qa’idah Nuraniyyah, and Correct Recitation of the Entire Qur’an

This is the foundational stage, where students are introduced to the Arabic alphabet and gradually trained to recite the Qur’an accurately and fluently. Particular emphasis is placed on:

  • Correct pronunciation of the Arabic letters according to their proper makharij (points of articulation).
  • Learning and applying the fundamentals of Tajwid.
  • Extensive practice in reading directly from the Qur’an to ensure precise and authentic recitation.

A distinctive feature of the Institute is its integration of audio-visual resources and modern educational technology to make teaching and learning the Qur’an more effective and accessible.

2. Tahfizul Qur’an (Qur’an Memorization): The second level focuses on the memorization of the Holy Qur’an under the supervision of highly qualified instructors and certified Qur’an reciters (Qaris) who hold recognized Ijazah certifications from various countries around the world.

Since students are expected to pursue formal certification and Ijazah upon completing their memorization, the Institute employs specialized and contemporary teaching methodologies that strengthen memorization and prepare students for successful certification.

3. Advanced Tajweed and Ijazah in the Riwayah of Hafs from Asim: The third level is dedicated to advanced Tajwid studies and obtaining an Ijazah with an uninterrupted chain of transmission (sanad) in the Riwayah of Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, extending directly back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

A prerequisite for receiving this Ijazah is to have memorized the entire Qur’an—from Surat al-Fatihah to Surat an-Nas—with the highest level of precision, mastery, and retention.

To achieve this objective, An-Nour Institute ensures the presence of experienced Huffaz and expert Qur’an reciters specializing in the rules of Tajwid. This enables students not only to complete a strong and reliable memorization of the Qur’an but also to master the principles of Tajwid, thereby qualifying them to receive the prestigious Ijazah.

The department teaches specialized knowledge of the science of recitation, its divisions, origins, introduction of the ten imams with their narrators and methods including chain of transmission to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) through a scientific curriculum and an applied study in which the student receives from his teacher the recitation with perfection and superior skill along with application of the rules that assists in distinguishing between the successively narrated recitation modes.

The study program has three branches:

Tajweed: This first section is a series of lessons in the science of Tajweed in an innovative style, which helps the student to understand and apply the practical rules of Tajweed, and to excel in reciting the Quran in the best way. It is achieved through memorization, understanding, explanation, and application of the text of Tuhfat al-Atfal by the scholar Al-Jamzuri, the text of Al-Jazariyyah by Imam Ibn al-Jazari, and the Samnudiyyat, in addition to other study materials masterfully picked from reliable sources of the discipline.

Recitation Modes and Chains of Transmission: This second section teaches the successive recitation modes through memorization, understanding, explanation, and application from the following books:

  • Text of Al-Shatibiyyah for the seven recitations by Imam al-Shatibi
  • Text of Al-Durrah Al-Mudiyyah for the three recitations that complete the ten approved recitations by Imam Ibn Al-Jazari
  • Text of Tayyibat Al-Nashr in the ten recitations by Imam Ibn Al-Jazari

Then obtaining the licenses by:
1. The narration of Hafs and Shu’bah from Asim Al-Kufi  2. The narration of Warsh and Qaloon from Nafi’ Al-Madani
3. The narration of al-Bazzi and Qunbul from Ibn Kathir Al-Makki   4. The narration of al-Duri and al-Susi from Abu Amr Al-Basri
5. The narration of Hisham and Ibn Zakwan from Abdullah bin Aamir Ash-Shami   6. The narration of Khalaf and Khallad from Hamzah Az-Zayyat Al-Kufi
7. The narration of Abu al-Harith and al-Duri from al-Kisa’i Al-Kufi   8. The narration of Ibn Jammaz and Ibn Wardan from Abu Ja’far Al-Madani
9. The narration of Ruways and Rouh from Ya’qub Al-Hadrami Al-Basri and   10. The narration of Ishaq and Idris from Khalaf Al-Ashir Al-Baghdadi, from the way of Al-Shatibiyyah and Al-Tayyibah which conclude all ten successive recitations, the small and the large, with their chains of transmission connected to the master of the two worlds Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.

The Higher Specialization: This third branch encompasses all the specialized sciences related to Quranic recitations, grounded in a comprehensive and in-depth study of the discipline. It examines the origin and development of these recitations, tracing their description and form from the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the present day. The branch explores the connection between the Quran and its various recitation modes, the successive narration of these modes, and the authenticity of their chains of transmission. Additionally, it delves into the knowledge of anomalous and interpretive recitations, the context of their origin, and the reasons for differences among recitation modes, as well as the criteria for preferring one over another.

Furthermore, this branch investigates the influence of Quranic recitation sciences on other Islamic disciplines and their interdisciplinary relationships. It covers specific aspects such as the rules of stopping and starting in recitation, the writing style of the Quranic text and its precision, compatibility of the Quranic text with Arabic language and literature. The study also includes the attribution, differentiation, and refinement of narration chains, the classification of reciters, and notable doubts raised about recitation modes and their related sciences—along with scholarly responses to these doubts. This extensive field ensures a thorough understanding of Quranic recitation in both its historical and contemporary contexts.
